UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- One man is dead after a plane crash in Monroe.

Late Friday afternoon around 4:10, authorities say a small plane crashed in a rural area of Union County off of Poplin Road. Authorities say the scene was north of Highway 74.

According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, the aircraft was an ultra light and had just one occupant, who was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Police have identified the victim as 59-year-old Robert William Schroll, of Pageland, South Carolina. Monroe Police say Schroll's body will be sent to Charlotte for an autopsy.

Authorities say the plane went up in flames upon impact in the wooded area.

"It was surreal. When you're used to seeing planes flying-- to see one that had just gone down, you immediately want to get to it to help," said Bill Laucha.

The FAA will investigate exactly what brought the plane down.
