8-year-old girl dies at hospital after near-drowning incident in east Charlotte

Two people were hospitalized after a near-drowning incident in east Charlotte, Medic says.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police says an eight-year-old girl has died at a hospital following a near-drowning incident in east Charlotte Saturday evening.

Medic responded to a call from 6300 block of Montego Drive regarding a possible drowning call. Two sisters, ages 8 and 11, were transported to CMC and CMC University for life-threatening injuries.

The girl's 11-year-old sister was listed under stable condition, CMPD says.

Mecklenburg County Health Department says the pool passed inspections on May 11.

Per protocol with any emergencies, the health department says they went back to reinspect the pool after the incident. The health department found multiple violations unrelated to the drowning, which includes, improper callback number for 911 and a sign that needed to be updated.

The health department says until the violations are fixed, the pool will not reopen.

Earlier Saturday, Medic responded to a different drowning call in west Charlotte. The child involved in the near-drowning incident was being treated for serious injuries.

A GoFundMe has been created to support the family of the two sisters.
