Charlotte could see 4 inches of snow this weekend: 5 things to know Thursday, Dec. 6

The Carolinas are bracing for a winter storm that could bring several inches of snow to Charlotte and a foot to the mountains. Greg Olsen's season is over after another injury and an emergency hearing has been called in North Carolina's 9th district.

"Somebody... is going to have a storm that they'll tell their kids about"

A winter storm that will likely impact travel and knock out power in the region is expected to bring 1-4 inches of snow to Charlotte this weekend. The timing of the storm will be Saturday night through Monday -- and possibly into Tuesday.

First Warn chief meteorologist Brad Panovich released his first projected snowfall totals on Wednesday night. He said the mountains could get 12-16 inches of snow. Along I-40, 8-12 inches could accumulate. Folks north of Charlotte could see 4-8 inches while the Charlotte metro could get 1-4 inches. South of Charlotte may see a trace to 1-inch.

Panovich moved his snow meter to the 8-9 range for the mountains and foothills and the 4-5 range for Charlotte. Those are NOT snow totals; 8-9 means "buy a sled" and 4-5 means "buy bread and milk".

Lawmaker calls for emergency hearing on fraud allegations in North Carolina's 9th district

Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly, one of the senior Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said the meeting should be held this session, with Republicans still in control of the House.

The controversy centers around irregularities among mail-in absentee ballots. NBC Charlotte confirmed the state board of elections subpoenaed a GOP consulting group based in Cornelius on Wednesday.

The Red Dome Group reportedly hired the man accused of leading the scheme to collect absentee ballots in Bladen County. The political consulting firm was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by Republican Mark Harris.

Harris won the race by just 905 votes, but officials have chosen not to certify the results in light of allegations that Red Dome workers used fraudulent tactics to collect, alter, or possibly discard absentee mail-in ballots.

The investigation could lead to charges or even a new election.

"In the 16 years of studying North Carolina politics in depth, I'm not sure I can point to a modern incident at the federal level of something like this," said Michael Bitzer, political science professor at Catawba College. "When you're talking about a U.S. House of Representatives election, this is critical for the governance of the state and the country."

The new Mecklenburg County sheriff ended the department's agreement with ICE

Sheriff Garry McFadden notified Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that the Sheriff’s Office is ending its voluntary agreement with ICE. The 287(g) program has allowed ICE to operate within the Mecklenburg County jail since 2006.

“Today I’m ending ICE’s 287(g) program in Mecklenburg County and joining the majority of police and sheriff departments around the country who have declined to do ICE’s bidding because it erodes trust with our community and ties up critical resources that should be used to ensure public safety,” said Sheriff McFadden. “My commitment has been – and will remain – keeping this community safe. By ending this program, I will utilize unlimited office resources on preventing serious crimes and to improve public safety in our communities.”

Greg Olsen's 2018 season is over after another foot injury

Olsen exited last Sunday's loss at Tampa Bay in the first half with what he believes is a ruptured plantar fascia. It's the third injury to Olsen's right foot in two seasons after he broke the same bone twice and missed several games.

"It was actually doing pretty good as far as the bone was concerned, but it developed some soft tissue stuff over the course of the last six or seven weeks," Olsen said. "I dealt with it, tried to keep it at bay as best we could, but it was just a matter of time."

The 32-year-old said he wasn't ready to make any decisions regarding possible retirement when frustrated by the injury.
