Bicyclist hit, killed by SUV near Myers Park

CMPD is investigating a deadly crash involving a bicyclist and an SUV near Myers Park.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a deadly crash involving a bicyclist and an SUV near Myers Park.

CMPD responded to a crash in the 2200 block of Selwyn Avenue a little before 11 a.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, officers located a 2016 Acura SUV and an injured bicyclist.

The bicyclist, identified as Stacy Stranick, was transported to CMC Main where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Acura was not injured, CMPD said.

According to detectives, the Acura was traveling northeast on Selwyn Avenue towards Bucknell Avenue. The Acura hit Stranick as it tried to make a left turn onto Bucknell Avenue, CMPD said.

The driver of the Acura remained on scene and detectives said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The driver, Margaret Seneker, was charged with failing to yield the right of way and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Friends remembered Stranick for her passion for cycling.

"She loved to cycle," said Ursula Stack, a friend. "A very good cyclist."

"There was nobody who could stay with her. She was very strong," Stack added.

Local cyclists were stunned by the deadly incident.

"Definitely will make me think for the rest of my ride today," said Darcy Everett, a rider. "Pay even more attention to the cars that are around us."

"Heart goes out to them," said Ken Jones, a rider.

Seneker was also wearing a seatbelt and Stranick was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, CMPD said.
