CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- Detectives in Catawba County said a man that died in a house fire early Saturday morning died as a result of a gunshot wound.

Neighbors told NBC Charlotte's crew on the scene that they woke up to the flames around 6:30 a.m.

"When I opened the blinds in the dining room it's just directly in front of the house," said Faye Hendrick, who witnessed the fire. "The blaze was coming from the right side of the house."

Hendrick took out her cell phone and captured images of the fire.

"Hollered for my husband and said the house is on fire in front of us so I grabbed the phone and called 911," said Hendrick.

Investigators said a man, identified as Harry Lewis Bruner Jr., was inside the home when it caught fire. Bruner, 40, didn't make it out alive. Investigators determined that Bruner died as a result of a gunshot wound. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Multiple agencies are now investigating how the deadly inferno started.

"It's very sad and for the rest of the family my prayers are with them," said Hendrick.
