HICKORY, N.C. — There will be extra counselors at Northview Middle School in Hickory on Tuesday following the news that a student passed away.
An 8th grader fell from a second-floor stairwell last week, according to officials. He died on Monday.
"I think the main thing is to not to worry about school right now but to worry about what's most important. Worry about the missing piece of their life right now," one person said.
Extra staff will be at the school on Tuesday for anyone who needs to talk about the 13-year-old's death.
"Our Northview family is just really special. It's going to be a lot of loving on each other," said another person.
The school released this statement, which read in part:
"The Northview Middle School family — and all employees and students throughout the school district — are heartbroken. We will respect the privacy of the family during this devastating and difficult time."
There was no immediate word on funeral arrangements.
