Mint Hill man following drivers, making threats, police warn

Drivers in Mint Hill on alert, and police say it is more than a case of road rage.  They say a suspect hasn't just been harassing drivers, he has followed them and other first responders while they are on the job.

MINT HILL, N.C. (WCNC) - Drivers in Mint Hill on alert, and police say it is more than a case of road rage. They say a suspect hasn't just been harassing drivers, he has followed them and other first responders while they are on the job.

Mint Hill Police say they are investigating numerous claims that this driver has tried to run people off the road and in one case pointed a gun at another driver.

"It's very scary," said Melissa Connell. "I try to avoid this road at all cost just because i have two toddlers in the car it's terrifying to think that someone would chase you and run you off the road," she said.

Drivers like Connell now steering clear of Thompson Road and Idlewild nearby. They describe these streets as danger zone. Not because of the conditions of the road, but because of who is on it.

on and Idlewild nearby---are now danger zones---not because of the conditions of the road---but because of who is on it.

"I was petrified," said Nicole Montemurro. "I didn't know if he had a gun i didn't know if he was going to veer me off the road, I was by myself it was 430 in the morning," she recalled.

Mint Hill Police say they have received a number of complaints about a man in a white Chevy Impala taking pictures and videos of drivers. They say the man has tailgated other drivers, blocked them in and made threats. Police have identified that driver as Brian Robinson of Mint Hill. He has more than 100 criminal complaints against him. This includes a pending Assault with a Deadly Weapon Charge in Union County in February 2016.

Montemurro says she thought what happened to her was an isolated event, but she started to read other stories on social media from neighbors in Mint Hill that sounded a whole lot like hers.

"He kept speeding up then backing down slamming on the breaks, cutting me off to the point where I called my husband crying didn't know what to do," she said.

Montemurro says the driver followed her from Idlewild to 485 making the 24 mile trek to North Tryon. She moved to the area recently and didn't know where to go.

"He was violently shaking the wheel, looking at me mouthing something," she said. "As a girl by yourself at 4:30 in the morning it's beyond scary, even though I had a gun, doesn't make me that much more comfortable," Montemurro explained.

Montemurro says she still takes that route to work. But since that incident with the White Impala, she hasn't made that drive alone.

"My husband has actually drove me ever since," she said.

Mint Hill Police say they have increased patrols in the Thompson area and they are in contact with the Mecklenburg District Attorney's office about the complaints.

NBC Charlotte spoke with Brian Robinson on the phone, he denied all allegations against him.
