CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pedestrian died after being hit by a train in east Charlotte Wednesday night, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a train accident involving a pedestrian on Eastway Drive a little after 9 p.m. When officers got to the scene, 28-year-old Derrius Leroy Kelly, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives said impairment was suspected in the investigation. The engineer of the train said Kelly was walking across the tracks and stepped directly into the path of the train.
The engineer immediately brought the train to a stop after the collision and sounded the horn before hitting the pedestrian.
CMPD said there is no evidence of the engineer contributing to the crash.
