Police investigating after mom says son harmed at school

"I felt that if my child comes and tells you somebody is doing something to me it's my job as a parent to protect them," said Rodriguez.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local mother is outraged after her young child came home from school injured with bruises and scratches on his body.

That mother claims someone working inside the school harmed her 4-year-old. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating the incident.

"My son is being neglected and abused in school," Virginia Rodriguez said.

Tyler is a happy kid, but this past week when he came home from school his mom said Tyler's mood was different.

"I'm emotionally frustrated...I'm hurt," Rodriguez said. "I'm broken."

The CMPD police report says the suspect assaulted the victim, 4-year-old Tyler, by smacking the victim in the mouth and on top of the head with an open hand.

"He said, 'She hurts me.' I said where does she hurt you? And he says 'Right here and right here' so he pointed to his lip and his head," Rodriguez said.

Virginia shared photos of her 4-year-old after returning home from school.

"I felt that if my child comes and tells you, 'somebody is doing something to me,' it's my job as a parent to protect them," Rodriguez said.

"And you 100 percent believe your son?" asked NBC Charlotte's Xavier Walton.

"Absolutely," Rodriguez said. "He doesn't say things like that."

WCNC asked the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District about the alleged incident at Greenway Park Elementary School. Their response: Any time a parent has a concern and brings it to the attention of school administrators, the concern is checked out immediately by school leadership and CMS HR, as a standard procedure.

The safety and well-being of students and staff is priority at CMS.

"I didn't want them to get away with harming my child," Rodriguez said. "He does have special needs, and I kind of feel like I'm standing up for my son."
