YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A 28-year-old woman is facing several charges after deputies say she was driving while drunk before crashing into a tree at a York County elementary school.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, Diamond Barrett was seen driving erratically down Highway 21 in Fort Mill around 9 a.m. on Thursday.

When a deputy caught up with Barrett, officials say at first she stopped the car, but eventually sped off, crashing into a tree in the front of Springfield Elementary School.

Deputies say they discovered Barret had been drinking and driving.

No students or staff were injured during the incident, but the school was temporarily placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

As of Thursday night, deputies say Barrett was recovering from injuries at a hospital.

She’s facing charges of driving under the influence, open container in a vehicle, driving under suspension and failure to stop for blue lights.
