Temperature drops to 30s, frost advisories issued across Carolinas

Strong winds cancel events across the Carolinas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Up in the mountains, officials canceled the Woolly Worm Festival Sunday after strong winds blew through Saturday night.

The cold and windy temperatures moving in caught several vendors at the Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk off guard.

The high winds blew over several tents and damaged vendor items. A festival volunteer said this is the first time in 41 years the festival has shut down for a day, even through snow and rain.

The wind also affected the Carolina Balloon Festival up in Statesville this weekend. The festival posted on its Facebook page that a few pilots encountered high wind speeds Sunday morning, stopping anymore flying.

The balloons were finally able to launch around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Here in the Charlotte area, temperatures are expected to drop overnight with many areas under a freeze warning or frost advisory.

Because of this, New Outreach Ministries started a coat drive to collect coats for kids in need. They usually start this drive around Christmastime, but they decided to start earlier this year.

“When I heard the weather was getting colder, I know two children right now two children right now that don’t even have a sweater, and if they have a need, the Lord laid on my heart there are other parents out there who are wondering what are they going to do," Brenda Stevenson, a pastor with the New Outreach Christian Center, said.

The ministry will be collecting coats from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at New Outreach Christian Center at 3900 Gossett Avenue until October 29.
