Union County middle schooler recovering after spinal injury during football game

The 13-year-old has regained feeling in his arms as of Sunday afternoon according to Sun Valley High head football coach Tad Baucom.

MONROE, N.C. — A football player for Sun Valley Middle School is recovering after suffering an injury during a game Saturday night that left him with no feeling or function from the neck below.

The 13-year-old, regained feeling in his arms on Sunday afternoon, Sun Valley High School head football coach Tad Baucom told NBC Charlotte.

The family is requesting privacy as he recovers.

The school district released this statement to NBC Charlotte, saying:

“The Union County public school family is sending positive thoughts to our student athlete and his family. We are thinking of him during this challenging time and hope for a great recovery.”

Baucom said in his 37 years of coaching, this is only the third time a player has suffered an injury as significant as this one.
