CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pedestrian walked past the light rail cross bars at the intersection of North Tryon Street and University Pointe Boulevard on Sunday, July 7 just after 11:30 p.m. As he was crossing the tracks, officials say he was struck by a light rail train traveling north.

The pedestrian was transported to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center by Medic and succumbed from his injuries.  There were no reported injuries to any passengers on the train.

The pedestrian was identified as Marty Lee Parrott III, 27.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit and CATS representatives were called to the scene. Initial investigation revealed that the crossing bars, warning lights, and audible warning signals were all working properly at the time of the crash.
