INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — There's a mystery in the making in Union County.
Forrest Stephen Treat hasn't been seen since Monday around 11 a.m.
"This is not a TV show," said Susana Szarko, the sister of Treat's girlfriend. "This is reality."
A harsh reality that's still sinking in. It's now been more than 48 hours since officials said Treat mysteriously disappeared. Szarko said she considers him family.
"You start the day normal and then you start thinking and then you find yourself crying," said Szarko. "And then you go home and it hits you again."
Treat was caught on home surveillance video Monday. Officials said that's when he was seen putting his cell phone and wallet inside of his work van.
Minutes later, Treat was caught on another camera walking normal and smoking. Officials said it didn't appear he was in any sort of distress.
"It's mysterious," said Tony Underwood with the Union County Sheriff's Office. "Covered the area on foot, we covered the area with K9s, we even used drones."
On Wednesday, we sat down with Underwood to talk about the case.
"Is there any indication that he was in some sort of trouble or that he would need to flee from someone?" asked NBC Charlotte's Xavier Walton.
"Not to our knowledge," answered Underwood.
Officials said Forrest served in the U.S. Air Force and doesn't have any sort of criminal history.
"He's a very sweet, kind, brilliant person," said Szarko. "It's just the uncertainty. I think that's the hardest part."
Szarko had this message for Treat.
"We miss him," she said. "If he in any shape or form can hear us, then we want to see him back."
If you have any information on Treat's location, call 911.
