Protesters refuel heated I-77 debate

Protestors refueled the heated debate over I-77 toll lanes.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Protestors refueled the heated debate over I-77 toll lanes.

Dozens rallied fighting the project that would widen a 26 mile stretch of I-77 from uptown Charlotte to Mooresville.

Depending on where you live, I-77 can create a colossal headache. Most agree there's a problem, but the debate is over the answer.

"I feel let down by my politicians that I elected," said Laureen Bellows, a Mooresville resident.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, tolls at peak hours are projected to vary from 14-cents to 40-cents per mile, on average. The state signed a contract with Cintra that would last 50 years.

That's what has these taxpayers fired up. A battle that has taken a toll on everyone. Friday to re-ignite the fire, Exit 28 was packed with protestors.

"Drivers driving past are in support of us honking. I'm hearing semi-trucks on the interstate honking for us-- it's just amazing," said William Rakatanski.

Hundreds showed their support, including Mecklenburg County Commissioner Pat Cotham.

"It's definitely a bigger crowd-- the momentum is building," said Carole Gibbons.

Building all the way to Raleigh where there's hope for those against toll lanes in the General Assembly.

"We're rallying in support of the bills in the legislature right now to cancel the contract," said Kurt Knoss, with widen I-77.
