Search for small airplane underway during emergency that halted operations at Raleigh airport

A statement by the FAA identified the plane as a Piper PA32 that was on approach to Runway 32 when radar contact with the small aircraft was lost.

MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Operations at Raleigh-Durham International Airport have resumed after a small plane en route to the airfield disappeared from radar, sparking a massive search for the aircraft, authorities said Sunday.

According to a tweet issued by RDU, airport workers were notified at 7:25 p.m. by air traffic controllers from the Federal Aviation Administration that a small aircraft approaching the airport disappeared from radar somewhere over William B. Umstead State Park area, which is adjacent to the east side of RDU.
