CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A bicyclist was struck and killed Monday night in southeast Charlotte.

First responders were called to the 4800 block of Monroe Road Monday around 7:15.

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, and the bicyclist, identified as Pedro Tovar, III, was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Police say Tovar was not wearing a helmet and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision. Police also say the bicycle did not have any reflectors or activated lights at the time.

"The driver of the vehicle is very upset, very distraught and having a very tough time with this, understandably," said CMPD Sergeant David Sloan. "The driver is not being charged at this time. No alcohol in the driver, he had a valid driver’s license. We’re still investigating the crash though. Based on our conclusion we’ll determine if any charges are filed at a later time."
