3 local teams win state championships

Independence, Cox Mill and Forest Hills bring home the hardware

Three Charlotte-area teams won state basketball championships on Saturday.

4A: Independence 71, Heritage 60

Andra' McKee led the Patriots with 20 points, as Independence won its second state championship, and first since 1997.

Jamarius Burton added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Matt Smith (12 points) and Raja Milton (11 points) also scored in double figures.

Independence, coached by Preston Davis, finishes the season 31-1.

3A: Cox Mill 65, Northside-Jacksonville 63

Northside hit a would-be game-winning three pointer with one second left, but the officials called the shooter out of bounds before the shot, allowing the Chargers to hold on for their second-straight state title.

Wendell Moore Jr., led Cox Mill with 24 points. Caleb Stone-Carrawell added 18, and UNC signee Rechon Black had nine points.

Cox Mill, coached by Jody Barbee, finishes 29-3.

Northside had won 59-consecutive games, including last year's 2A championship.

2A: Forest Hills 63, Greene Central 59

Jai Rorie made four free throws in the last 14 seconds to give the Yellow Jackets their first state championship.

Trey Belin scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.

Forest Hills, coached by Matt Sides, finishes the season 30-2.
