One-on-one with new Wake Forest Athletics Director John Currie

While Currie took over the position from outgoing AD Ron Wellman on May 1, he was involved in the decision to extend football coach Dave Clawson through the 2026 season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — New Wake Forest Athletics Director John Currie stopped by NBC Charlotte on Thursday to discuss the Demon Deacons program with Sports Director Nick Carboni.

While Currie took over the position from outgoing AD Ron Wellman on May 1, he was involved in the decision to extend football coach Dave Clawson through the 2026 season.

Clawson is 28-35 in five seasons under Clawson, but 22-17 with three bowl wins over the last three years.

“Dave Clawson was a great fit,” Currie said. “We’re one of just over two schools in the country to have won three consecutive bowl games, but also be in the highest cohort of academic performance in the APR statistic.”

But before Wellman left, he made the decision to keep basketball coach Danny Manning through the 2019 season despite a 65-93 record and one NCAA appearance in five years.

“I get it, it’s been a disappointing run,” Currie said. “The decision to continue with Coach Manning was made by Ron Wellman. I’m in the process now in getting better to know all of our coaches, including Coach Manning.”
