CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The matchup everyone was hoping for on Thursday will go down Friday as the Duke Blue Devils face the North Carolina Tar Heels in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte.
The Blue Devils reached the semifinals on the back of Zion Williamson, who scored 29 points in his first game back in almost a month after a knee injury. Williamson finished the game a perfect 13 of 13 in the 84-72 win. RJ Barrett scored 23 and pulled down six rebounds to help Duke keep their hopes alive for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina enters Friday night's matchup on an eight-game winning streak including Thursday night's 83-70 win over Louisville. The Heels were led by Luke Maye's 19 points. Coby White added 17 and Cameron Johnson scored 14 in the first half to give Roy Williams' team a 45-35 lead at halftime.
The win was a bit of revenge for Williams, who suffered his worst home loss ever as North Carolina's coach when Louisville routed the Heels by 19 in January.
The other semifinal will feature No. 1 seed Virginia and No. 4 seed Florida State. The Cavaliers dominated the second half of their 76-56 win over NC State. FSU defeated Virginia Tech in overtime when Terrence Mann's runner miraculously fell in the hoop with just 1.8 seconds left in the extra period.
The championship game is Saturday night at Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
