GVSU cancels first game due to COVID-19 issues

The university says all tickets can be refunded or exchanged for a different home game.

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Grand Valley State has canceled their first game of the season due to COVID-19 concerns from the opposing team, Edinboro.

The team was previously rescheduled from Thursday, Sept. 2 to Saturday, Sept. 4, but administration officially decided to cancel the game on Monday.

Officials said the Edinboro football team had roster issues due to their virus protocol.

"We are obviously disappointed with the cancelation of the game," said head coach Matt Mitchell.

"Our players were looking forward to getting back on the field for this game, but we will regroup and show the resilience this group has displayed over the last two years."

Grand Valley State will continue to look for opponents to play on Friday, Sept. 3 or Saturday, Sept. 4.

The university says all tickets can be refunded or exchanged for a different home game.
