CHARLOTTE, N.C. – South Pointe senior quarterback Derion Kendrick added another accolade to his impressive resume Monday when he was named Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina Monday.
Kendrick led the Stallions to a perfect 15-0 record and a fourth straight state championship this year. Kendrick, who is committed to Clemson University, passed for 2,693 yards and 30 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He added another 1,195 yards on the ground with 19 touchdowns.
Kendrick’s playoff performance was nothing short of sensational, as he piled on 19 combined touchdowns in five games. He finished his career with 6,134 passing yards, 1,919 rushing yards and 98 total touchdowns.
Kendrick is practicing for the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team this week. Outside of football, Kendrick has volunteered with Read Across America and has donated his time as a youth football coach.
“Bottom line, Derion Kendrick is the best player in the state of South Carolina. He’ll play on Sundays,” said Lancaster head coach Bobby Collins in a press release. “What makes him dangerous is he loves to compete. As a coach, I can assure you he’s the key to their success because you must prepare for him and then the rest of the team.”
Kendrick is the second Charlotte-area player to bring home the award in South Carolina, joining Northwestern’s Justin Worley (2010).
