Perry Fewell named Panthers secondary coach

The Gaston County native has more than 30 years of coaching experience, including 21 in the NFL.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that veteran coach and North Carolina native Perry Fewell has been hired as the team's new secondary coach.

Fewell, who has 34 years of experience including 21 in the NFL, spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his time in Jacksonville, Fewell's secondary was the best in the NFL, averaging just 182 yards per game and a league-best 76.4 passer rating.

Fewell coached with Panthers head coach Ron Rivera with the Chicago Bears in 2005 when Rivera was the defensive coordinator. That Bears defense was No. 1 in the NFL with 24 interceptions.

Fewell lettered as a defensive back at Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) from 1980-83 and was part of the university’s 2011 Hall of Fame class. He lettered on the football and track teams at South Point High School in Belmont, N.C., and was inducted into the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He also earned induction into the Gaston County (N.C.) Hall of Fame in June 2012.
