Charlotte Checkers one win away from first title

“We’ve got great leadership in the locker room. Positive thinking. We stick together.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Checkers are one win away from winning the AHL’s Calder Cup Trophy for the first time in team history.

Charlotte mounted a two-goal comeback in Game 4, Thursday in Chicago, beating the Wolves 5-3 to take a 3-1 series lead.

The Checkers need just one more win and could get it Saturday night in Chicago.

“I really believe it’s because everybody likes each other and everybody’s rooting for each other,” said head coach Mike Vellucci. “We’ve got great leadership in the locker room. Positive thinking. We stick together.”

Puck drops at 8 p.m., Saturday night for Game 5 in Chicago. If the Checkers lose, they will return home for Game 6 on Thursday.
