IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. – North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after a single-vehicle accident closed both lanes of I-77 in Iredell County Friday morning.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., state troopers received a call for an accident on I-77 south near mile marker 36 just north of Mooresville. Troopers say that the driver ran off the left side of the highway and struck a concrete barrier, causing the vehicle to catch on fire.
Troopers say that several truck drivers stopped to help and pulled the driver from the fiery crash. The good Samaritans also extinguished the fire, according to highway patrol. Emergency crews then took the driver of the vehicle to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and is said to be in stable condition.
The road is expected to open by 6:15 a.m.
Officials have not determined if any charges will be filed in the case.
