Woman charged with killing pedestrian while driving impaired in Charlotte, police say

Officials reported a serious accident forced the closure and said the closure will last for a while.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Sharon Amity Road between Central Ave. and Wilora Lake Road was closed Friday morning in Charlotte following a deadly crash. On Saturday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said a driver was now charged with hitting the pedestrian after running a red light.

Around 6 a.m., officials said the serious accident forced the closure. Medic said one person died as a result of the crash.

On Saturday, CMPD said Leslie Denise Haney was driving her Nissan Sentra along the road around 5:38 a.m. Officers said she was driving at a high rate of speed, running a red light before hitting the pedestrian.

Haney was described as impaired by police, although a toxicology report's results are still pending as of writing. She is now charged with 2nd-degree murder, felony death by motor vehicle, and felony possession of a controlled substance.

As of writing, the victim's identity is not yet released.
