DOT, Carolinans prep for possible winter storm

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina DOT crews in the Charlotte area began heading into work Saturday night as a winter storm approaches the region.

Crews from Gaston to Catawba Counties have been focusing on placing brine solution on highways -- particularly Interstate 85, 77 and 40.

DOT plans to have many of its crews stationed along bridges and elevated surfaces so they can respond as needed.

Families like Nadia and Hannah Omes-Taylor are already preparing for the winter weather.

"We have a snow chain that we have for our truck in case anyone gets stuck," Nadia said.

Hannah added, "We have to get all of our animals put up."

Mel Burleson, who spent Saturday night in Charlotte's South End, said she's more concerned about the cold temperatures.

"I'm confused," Burleson said laughing. "I think the trees and the flowers are confused! Sinuses are confused!"

Jim Putnam, who was with Burleson, said he still plans to do his daily six-mile walk.

"I've been doing it all winter long," Putnam said. "This isn't even cold."
