Flood concerns rise as heavy rain moves through Carolinas

Watauga County-based DOT crews spent all Friday morning and part of the afternoon clearing several inches of snow off the shoulders of roadways and on top of storm drains.

All of the Charlotte region remains under a flood watch through Saturday afternoon as rain and large piles of leftover snow from the weekend could result in flooding and standing water in low-lying areas.

In Watauga County, the Boone Mall's back parking lot flooded around mid-afternoon.

Watauga County-based DOT crews spent all Friday morning and part of the afternoon clearing several inches of snow off the shoulders of roadways and on top of storm drains.

County maintenance engineer Kevin Whittington said the salt his crews spread preparing for last weekend's snow is helping to keep roads passable.

"We have so much salt and material probably on the edge of the roads this rain is adding to it," Whittington said. "It's allowing the waters to make its way to our drainage structures."

Whittington said even roadways with some standing water could be dangerous to drivers.

"Puddles of water, they could hydroplane in that," he said. "Just be cautious of that throughout the county."
