UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A hawk is missing after several crates were blown out of a truck during a transport from the Wilmington area to the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.

The sanctuary posted on Facebook about the ordeal Thursday night, saying the accident happened somewhere between Wilmington and Maxton along Highway 54.

The original post stated the crates were not strapped down properly, however, a second post said they were secured.

"The storm was pounding on them. He [the driver] strapped all the animals down and left trying to beat the weather. At this point, we thought this was our last option, and we were desperate," the second post read.

The rescue said several animals were recovered but a hawk, Achilles, was still missing late Thursday night. The transport was from Skywatch Bird Rescue in Cape Fear.
