Chesterfield Co. residents resilient in the face of Florence's wrath

A collapsed bridge, washed out roads and even lost pigs in Chesterfield County, but that can't dampen the spirit of the people living there.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, N.C. — Perhaps on a normal day, this would be the kind of story that would be make everyone’s jaw drop but after receiving more than 20 inches of rain here in Chesterfield county flooded out roads have become an all too common of a sight.

Reginald Brown said he and his family were stuck in their Cheraw home throughout the storm.

“We couldn’t get out. It was pretty bad,” Brown said. He said he'd never seen weather this bad.

So much water weighed on the roads on Sunday that Highway 145, just north of Chesterfield, gave out when an 18-wheeler crossed a small bridge.

The sheriff said the driver was shaken up, but was expected to be alright.

Brown’s uncle, Joe, surveyed the scene of another collapsed roadway, McMillian road, in Cheraw. “Hugo wasn’t this bad. I’m serious,” Joe said.

Emergency officials say parts of the county received more than 20 inches of rain. “It started Friday and that was it. It’s been rough,” said Joe.

Losing more than power and access around town, Brown also lost his pack of prized pigs. “Can’t count them up. Just seen a couple of them out there floating.”

Some might have lost a source of their livelihood but resiliency resounds in Chesterfield County.

“Family is still together so that’s a good thing,” said Brown.
