Scattered strong thunderstorms bring heavy rain, hail to Charlotte area

Scattered thunderstorms are bringing heavy rain and strong winds with the threat of localized flooding in some areas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Multiple Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued in the Charlotte area as scattered storms are bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the Carolinas Sunday.

First Warn meteorologist Iisha Scott said these storms are capable of producing quarter-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Sunday was also the hottest day of the year, with highs reaching 89 degrees. Scott says some of the storms that pop up Sunday evening could be severe with strong winds and heavy rain. Localized flooding could also be a concern as the storms aren't moving very much.

Pea-sized hail was reported in Matthews around 3:45 p.m. Sunday as those storms popped up. Hail was also reported in Indian Land and PIneville Sunday afternoon.
