City of Charlotte asks for community's help to keep storm drains clear

Mecklenburg County has more than 100,000 storm drains that can clog easily during heavy rains in the fall.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With the amount of rain Thursday storm drains in the area sure got a workout, and as WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich always says, falling leaves can complicate flooding issues as drains can get clogged.

So, who is responsible for cleaning them out, and how often does it happen?

While the city and county are responsible for keeping these clean, it’s also a job for the community and citizens as well.

“Charlotte Storm Water Services and Charlotte Department of Transportation coordinate closely to clear debris from storm drains along city streets and rights-of way," said City of Charlotte Senior Public Information Specialist Leo Caplanides.

"With more than 100,000 drains in our area, we appreciate the public’s help. If you see a blocked storm drain, safely attempt to clear it when it is not raining," he added.

You can also help by reporting storm drain blockages.  Citizens can call 3-1-1 weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. or any time by downloading the CLT+ app on your smartphone or submitting an online form at charlottenc.gov.
