Severe weather threat largely out of the Mecklenburg County area

Two warnings followed each other nearly back-to-back around 5 p.m. Sunday. Then just before 7 p.m., two more warnings were issued in the area.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A tornado warning was issued for Mecklenburg County and Union County in North Carolina at 6:50 p.m. Both of those warnings expired at 7:15 p.m., though WCNC Charlotte's First Warn team is continuing to track the latest as the threat moves through the area.

At 7:20 p.m., shortly after the tornado warning for Mecklenburg and Union counties expired, Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich said there is a weakening trend following the expiration of the warnings.

Two tornado warnings issued earlier Sunday for Chester and York counties in South Carolina have both ended as well. The two warnings followed each other back-to-back near Lowrys and McConnells in the 5 p.m. hour.

Both warnings were issued when the National Weather Service noticed severe thunderstorms with radar-indicated rotation.

While there was no immediate confirmation of tornados on the ground, images on social media indicated possible wall clouds, a common precursor to a tornado, in the atmosphere.

Scattered storms throughout the Carolinas Sunday have posed a risk for tornados and severe weather.

Additional storms over upstate South Carolina were still moving east towards Charlotte and the I-77 corridor around 6 p.m. First Warn Chief Meterologist Brad Panovich and the First Warn Storm Team will continue to monitor these storms  for any possible warnings.

A Tornado Warning means a tornado is occurring or likely in the next few minutes. Those in the area of the tornado warning should seek shelter inside a sturdy structure immediately. The best shelter is on the ground floor with as many walls between you and the outside as possible.

A possible tornado caused damage in Dillon County, South Carolina Sunday afternoon along Interstate 85.

The National Weather Service will visit Dillon County Monday to investigate the damage first hand.
