CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winter weather wreaked havoc on travelers across the southeast Friday, as hundreds of flights were canceled due to snow and ice conditions.

Delta canceled over 970 flights on Friday and 290 on Saturday in and out of Atlanta due to the conditions, which also affected flights to and from Charlotte. American Airlines confirmed to NBC Charlotte that at least 80 flights were canceled at Charlotte Douglas Friday, while dozens more were delayed due to inclement weather.

American also issued waivers for flights to and from numerous airports in cities on the east coast, including Boston, Charlotte, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. Those waivers allow travelers to change their trip without a change fee.

Charlotte Douglas also closed the top level of its hourly parking deck Friday afternoon due to possible freezing temperatures expected overnight. Airport officials reported snow and sleet conditions Friday afternoon.

Travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines on the status of all flights.
