CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Hornets announced on Sunday the team has named Mitch Kupchak the president of basketball operations and general manager.

Kupchak, 63, has been involved with the NBA front office for over 30 years, including 17 seasons as NBA general manager, according to the Hornets.

“In every role and in every stop during his tenure in the NBA, Mitch Kupchak has brought the highest levels of success to his teams. He’s a proven winner,” said Hornets principal owner and chairman Michael Jordan in a press release.

“Having won championships as both a player and an executive, we have confidence that Mitch is the right person to lead our basketball operations, build a winning culture and bring sustained success to our organization, for our fans and for the city of Charlotte,” Jordan added in the press release.

The Hornets parted ways with their previous general manager Rich Cho in February. Cho joined the organization prior to the 2011-2012 NBA season. He assumed day-to-day responsibilities of basketball operations on June 13, 2014.

Kupchak was formerly the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000 to 2017. He was fired by the Lakers in February 2017.

Kupchak played for North Carolina from 1972-1976. He was named the ACC player of the year during the 1975-1976 season. Kupchak played nine seasons in the NBA.
