Gibbs founds business management program

The NASCAR owner and Super Bowl-winning coach is teaming up with Strayer University

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Joe Gibbs has one of the most unique backgrounds in all of sports. A three-time Super Bowl champion head coach with the Washington Redskins and now the owner of one of NASCAR's top teams.

"I've had an unusual background," Gibbs told NBC Charlotte during an interview at Joe Gibbs Racing.

"I've been blessed."

Now the 77-year-old is venturing in to a new world -- higher education.

"It's one of the most interesting things we've done here at Joe Gibbs Racing," he said.

Gibbs is teaming up with Strayer University, an online school, to begin the Joe Gibbs Performance Management Program.

The program will be offered this spring, and specializes in some of Gibbs' core leadership principles: recruiting, team-building, and employee performance.

"How do you get people to really perform," said Gibbs.

The program will utilize innovative, documentary-style content produced by Strayer Studios, including course lessons and insights from Gibbs.

Gibbs isn't just the face of the program, he was heavily involved in creating the curriculum.

"He has completely been in the weeds with us developing the content," said Andrea Backman, Strayer's Chief Academic Officer. "Everything that our students will learn in the courses stamped "Joe Gibbs," are Joe Gibbs.

For Gibbs, it's a way to leave a footprint of his own leadership expertise for others to learn from.

"I've never really had a place where I had a chance to sit down and go through all the things about recruiting, management, motivating people and putting teams together," he said. "I've never had a chance to do this."

To help kick off the program, Gibbs and Strayer awarded 7 scholarships to Charlotte-area students.

"What we want to do is give a lot of people out there the opportunity to go online and accelerate their education," Gibbs said.
