Mecklenburg Co. Sheriff cancels gun raffle after Florida school shooting

"As the elected Sheriff, I fully understand the difference between responsible gun ownership and senseless gun violence and holding a gun raffle would not serve to advance the values close to my heart or the principles of my Office," said Mecklenburg County Sheriff Irwin Carmichael in a statement.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mecklenburg County Sheriff Irwin Carmichael has canceled a re-election campaign event in light of the Florida school shooting.

The Irwin Carmichael for Sheriff campaign planned to host a gun raffle on February 17 in Charlotte.

On Thursday, in light of the Florida school shooting, Carmichael released the following statement:

My heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and families of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In the wake of this tragedy, I am canceling Saturday’s gun raffle event and all raffle tickets purchased will be refunded. As the elected Sheriff, I fully understand the difference between responsible gun ownership and senseless gun violence and holding a gun raffle would not serve to advance the values close to my heart or the principles of my Office.

Refunds are being offered for those who purchased tickets.
