12-year-old reported missing in Union Co. found safe

On Wednesday evening, authorities told NBC Charlotte that a 12-year-old boy who had been missing for more than 24 hours was found safe.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. – On Wednesday evening, authorities told NBC Charlotte that a 12-year-old boy who had been missing for more than 24 hours was found safe. Chancellor Ashton Kelly was found in a wooded area near his home.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said Kelly was last seen around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday wearing a black shirt, khaki pants and black Jordan brand sneakers.

The child's grandmother told NBC Charlotte he goes by the nickname, Chance.

Kelly was last seen walking away from his family’s home on Salmon River Drive in the Meriwether neighborhood of Indian Trail. Police said he was last seen walking toward the pool area of the neighborhood. It is believed that he left home on his own but did not return.

Chancellor's grandmother told NBC Charlotte to her knowledge, her grandson showed no signs of mental illness. She said the entire family was distraught, especially Chancellor's twin brother.
