Gastonia motel room standoff ends peacefully

Police were trying to serve outstanding arrest warrants on a suspect at the Midtown Motor Inn off Franklin Boulevard Friday morning.

GASTONIA, N.C. — A nearly five-hour standoff near the heart of downtown Gastonia ended peacefully Friday morning after the suspect surrendered to police.

Police said they tried to serve arrest warrants on 29-year-old William Anders at the Midtown Motor Inn off Franklin Boulevard around 4:30 a.m., but officers said he wasn't being cooperative.

The department said they formed a perimeter with both uniformed and SWAT officers while negotiators began talking to Anders. He peacefully surrendered to police just before 10 a.m.

Officers said two women were in the motel room with Anders, but they weren't hurt.

Anders had outstanding arrest warrants from both North Carolina and South Carolina, including assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, breaking and entering, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Anders remained in the Gaston County Jail awaiting his likely extradition to South Carolina. His first court appearance was set for Monday.
