Large fire rips through Huntersville businesses

A strip of businesses across the street from town hall in downtown Huntersville was damaged when a fire ripped through the building Tuesday night.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — The businesses were damaged when a massive fire ripped through a building in downtown Huntersville Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the corner of Old Statesville Road and Huntersville-Concord Road around 8:30 p.m. When firefighters got to the scene, they saw flames bursting through the roof of a building that houses multiple small businesses. The fire quickly spread to two stores in the building.

One firefighter had to be rescued from the building after getting lost in the thick smoke. The fire was under control by 9 o'clock.

"During the progression of fighting fire, we did have a firefighter that became disoriented," said one Huntersville Fire official.

Old Statesville Road was shut down while firefighters put out the fire and made sure there were no hot spots. Huntersville Fire Department called the operation a "quick, aggressive interior attack" to limit the fire from destroying the entire building.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. There were no injuries.
