ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A Lancaster man is in custody after allegedly taking an infant from the child's grandmother's home in Rock Hill and attempting to evade police.

According to the Lancaster Sheriff's Office, the incident began at 1:40 a.m. on Friday. Lancaster deputies were alerted by Rock Hill Police to be on the look out for 28-year-old Gabriel L’Ambiance Ingram driving a Ram pickup truck.

Ingram was accused of taking a nine-month-old infant from the child's grandmother's home without the consent of the mother.

A Lancaster deputy driving on Highway 5 towards Rock Hill saw a car that matched the description given by Rock Hill Police. The deputy pursued the truck, which made a U-turn at North Corner Road heading north.

The deputy followed the truck as the driver attempted to make a right turn onto Nivens Road, but lost control and ran into a ditch. The driver ran away from the scene on foot and was not caught by the deputy. No one else was found in the truck.

Officers along with a K-9 unit responded to the scene to search for the suspect as well as a State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) helicopter.

At 7:15 a.m. the sheriff's office received a tip that a man matching the description of the driver was inside the BoJangles at Collins Road in Indian Land.

Officers responded and took the man into custody without incident. The suspect was later identified as Ingram, the driver of the Ram truck and the man Rock Hill Police were searching for.

Ingram gave information that led police to safely recover the nine-month-old infant from a home in Rock Hill.

“We all breathed a sigh of relief when we confirmed from the Rock Hill Police Department that the child had been found, and we are glad the child is safe and unharmed,” said Sheriff Barry Faile.

“Our deputies were able to move into place to intercept Ingram soon after they received the information from the Rock Hill Police Department and successfully brought this incident to a close without significant injury to anyone.”

During a search of the truck, police found suspected marijuana and a Glock .40 caliber handgun.

Ingram has been charged with failure to stop for blue light and siren, driving under suspension, carrying a pistol, possession of a pistol by a person convicted of a crime of violence and possession of marijuana.

Additional charges from Rock Hill Police are pending.
