Self-driving cars being tested on roads in the Carolinas

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is now testing self-driving vehicles on a state highway.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation is now testing self-driving vehicles on a state highway.

The state's DOT gave North Carolina State University a grant to develop a driverless transit system.

NCDOT leaders said they want to stay ahead of this emerging technology but others, however, aren't so sure if our state is ready for autonomous vehicles.

Skeptics of the technology are hoping state officials pump their brakes after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a self-driving Uber in Arizona last month.

Uber is still moving forward with it’s plans to launch the cars. In Georgia, a Google-owned, Waymo, is currently testing self-driving semis.

Supporters say taking impaired and distracted drivers out of the equation will eliminate traffic and car accidents.

NBC Charlotte's Savannah Levins posted a poll on Twitter. Among the 130-plus responses on Twitter, only 20 percent believe the Tar Heel State is ready for self-driving cars.
