CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County has more than 50 creeks and tributaries and all of those makeup over 3,000 miles of creeks in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. All those waterways are about to be spotlighted with the start of Creek Week.
The reason why there is a Creek Week is because a tremendous amount of trash gets into our creeks and lakes. The debris flows into the water from storm drains, flooding rains, and illegal dumping by people.
Keeping our creeks healthy and clean is important. You can make ad difference by learning how to care for your neighborhood creek.
Creeks provide a source of local drinking water, a refuge for wildlife, and a location for many community greenways.
Everyone can participate but if you are under 14 years old, organizers ask you to have a parent or guardian with you. Make sure you wear clothes that can get wet or dirty. Mecklenburg County officials will provide supplies like gloves and trash bags. And remember to wear a mask.
