CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There were disturbing developments Wednesday about a Spanish tutor accused of sexually abusing a young girl.

This month, Ricardo Mata was charged with a sex crime involving a seven year-old girl at summer camp at a local church last year.

According to a police report, Mata was accused of fondling a six year-old girl at a local school in 2009. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department said the district attorney decided not to prosecute the case at the time.

Mata runs the program, PlaySpanish, which was also offered at some Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools in the past. The district said Mata last served as a volunteer in December, and he’s no longer allowed on campus.

NBC Charlotte asked CMPD about Mata being previously investigated but not prosecuted.

“I think it’s more frustrating for the community, put us aside, for the community to know that this individual is out there perpetrating this kind of behavior on some of the most vulnerable people we have in our community, little six-year-old girls,” said Rob Tufano, a CMPD spokesman.

NBC Charlotte reached out to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office. A spokesperson said the state bar prohibits their office from commenting on people with pending charges.

Jail records showed Mata remains behind bars on a $50,000 bond.
