Confederate flags fly over local highways

The flag was first spotted several days ago on private land just off the Exit 33 ramp along U.S. 321 North. It's the latest of several flags flapping prominently along highways.

MAIDEN, N.C. -- A new Confederate flag has been raised on a stretch of land overlooking a busy Catawba County highway.

The flag was first spotted several days ago on private land just off the Exit 33 ramp along U.S. 321 North. It's the latest of several flags flapping prominently along highways.

Sons of Confederate Veterans' Smitty Smith said the group hopes to have flags in every county along the Interstate 40 corridor.

"We'll put up flag for every monument taken down," Smith said, referring to Confederate statues being removed in cities nationwide.

Catawba County NAACP's Jerry McCombs said the flags are a reminder that racism is still alive.

"I hope they will enjoy putting them up because we're enjoying taking those monuments down," McCombs said.
