How to cure summer ailments

Dr. Ryan Shelton talks about treating sunburn, bug bites and poison ivy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It's summertime and we all need to be aware of summer ailments. Dr. Ryan Shelton with Tryon Medical Partners has these summertime health tips.

Bug bites can be itchy and annoying.  To prevent bug bites, try to be somewhere that's breezy.  Use a bug repellent. If you're bitten hydrocortisone cream can help.

Another thing to beware of is poison ivy!  The oil and resin on the leaf can cause a red bumpy rash. Benadryl can help if you suffer from an allergy to poison ivy, as well.

Of course, always wear sunscreen. Put it on 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside.   Reapply often. If you use a spray, don't forget to rub it in. To treat sunburns, use a cool compress or frozen bag of vegetables to cool the skin. Aloe can help as well.
