Deputies, United Way, and Santa brighten Christmas for hundreds of kids

The gifts are unwrapped which gives parents an opportunity to make them their own.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A training center transformed into the North Pole Friday as the York County Sheriff's Office, United Way of York County, and Santa teamed up to provide gifts for nearly 200 families, or 600 children.

Deputies helped load cars with fun gifts for those less fortunate.

"Most of our parents are working every day, but sometimes may have something come up," said James Jeter with United Way. "I think all kids in our community deserve to have a Christmas."

Morgan Lancaster is a volunteer who's back for her fifth year in a row.

"I hate that we don't get to see them open the toys on Christmas morning because that would be so much fun," she said. "We have volunteers that donate the toys, then we have volunteers that pack the bags, Volunteers that deliver the toys to the center, and then volunteers that are helping to get these toys to the families today (Friday)."

The gifts are unwrapped which gives parents an opportunity to make them their own. NBC Charlotte spoke with one mother who didn't want to share her name, but she did share what the gifts meant to her.

"I think it will be really, really, really exciting for me," she said. "Something that is really, really meaningful to me, especially when I can't provide like I would like to provide for her. It's a blessing."
