Financial infidelity: New survey shows the different kind of 'cheating' that's breaking up couples

These surveys specifically touched on credit card debt and hidden spending, and how that links with divorce.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The online magazine Money is breaking down some surveys, showing how people really feel about our finances -- and our spouses.

While budget struggles can burden couples, the report's data from Debt.com allows a closer look at the numbers behind the sneaky spending. These surveys specifically touched on credit card debt and hidden spending, and how that links with divorce.

The data showed over one in three divorced Americans said credit card debt played a factor in their decision to split from their spouse. Of those who blamed that debt as a primary factor, seven in 10 said their ex-spouse hid the credit card debt from them.

Writers at Money have a term for this: They're calling it "financial infidelity."

From there, the disagreements get a bit broader. About 13% of all respondents said disagreements over shopping habits in general hurt their marriages, and 23% blame spending on restaurants and bars. But here's the big number: 57% blame arguments over large expenses like cars and furniture.
