Here's what you need to know before filing a claim if you get into a collision

Any wreck has the potential to be expensive, both to fix your car and to cover any medical help you may need.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Now that the holiday season is over, more people are heading back to work. That means the roads are back to being busy, thereby increasing the chance of getting in a wreck.

Personal injury lawyer John Fitch recently highlighted what you want to do if you do get in a crash.

Firstly, no matter how big or small the collision is, you want to gather all the information at the scene. It's essential to get all of the information about the vehicles involved, other drivers' names, and their contact and insurance information.

WCNC Charlotte is always asking "where's the money?" If you need help, reach out to WCNC Charlotte by emailing money@wcnc.com.

Also, if there are any witnesses, it would be good to get their information as well.  Make sure to take pictures to document the scene as best as you can, and don't forget to file an accident or police report.

Additionally, report the accident to your insurance company. Keep in mind, you should let your insurer know within 24 hours, even if you don't want to make a claim, because the other driver could make a claim against you.

Even if your injury seems minor, it's still important to seek medical attention. Only a doctor can diagnosis the full extent of your injury and potentially prevent bigger problems down the line.

Finally, think about getting a lawyer.  Insurance companies sometimes use strategies to devalue a potential settlement.  So even though an attorney might receive money for taking on your case, they might be able to also maximize any compensation owed, leaving you the energy to focus on your recovery.
