3 charged in connection to death of Greensboro officer killed at Sheetz, police say

Greensboro police said Sergeant Philip Dale Nix was killed after a shooting at the gas station Saturday afternoon.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Police have arrested three people in connection to the killing of Greensboro police officer who was shot at a Sheetz gas station in Colfax.

Greensboro police said Sergeant Philip Dale Nix was killed after a shooting at the gas station Saturday afternoon.

Sgt. Nix was off duty when he saw a crime in progress and was trying to stop it when he was shot. Coincidently, another off-duty officer and a Guilford County paramedic were on the scene. They rushed to help Sgt. Nix, but he later died at the hospital. 

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with Sgt. Nix’s death. Jamere Justice Foster, 18, Z’quriah Le’Pearce Blackwell, 18, and John Walter Morrison, 28.

Foster is charged with First Degree Murder, Larceny, and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny and is held with no bond.

Warrants allege the suspects were stealing several cases of beer valued at about $83.45 in total. 

Blackwell is charged with Accessory after the fact to First Degree Murder and is held with a $500,000 bond.

Blackwell helped Foster escape. The warrants said Blackwell told Foster, "They needed to get out of there because he just killed a cop."

The warrants also said Blackwell helped Foster sell the stolen beer, purchase narcotics, talked with him about disposing the firearm, and removing the license plate off the getaway car. 

Morrison is charged with Accessory after the fact to First Degree Murder, Larceny, and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny and is held without bond.

Police said additional charges could be expected.

Sgt. Nix worked with GPD under many assignments including Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Detective, Patrol Corporal, Patrol Sergeant, and his most current assignment was as Supervisor of the Family Victims Unit. He was also a Team Leader for the Peer Support Team for over 12 years and was the current Assistant Team Leader of the GPD Honor Guard.

Greensboro police said Sgt. Nix served the city faithfully for 23 years and was a loving husband, father, son, and brother.
